KAO Features

Special Event/Tournament Coverage
What we’re looking for: Reporting that captures the news, vibe, history, or soul of the event. What made it memorable? What sort of people participated? Why is this event unique? More than just the schedule and tournament results, we want the story behind the event. What is the real story? (300-500 words)

Gear Features
What we’re looking for: Gear reviews, essays about gear, discussions on pros and cons, or this versus that. Can be cool new gear or old favourites. (300-500 words)

Headline Kayak Fishing News
What we’re looking for: Industry news, current events, conservation issues, personalities making headlines, and any other headline news stories. (300-500 words)

Profiles
What we’re looking for: Entertaining, insightful glances into the lives of kayak fishing’s most intriguing characters and/or their take on certain issues. Begin with a brief intro explaining a little about who this person is, what they do for a living, and why readers should care, then follow up with Q&A. Ideally, this reaches outside the ranks of tournament pros to include those involved in the fishing and paddling industries; as well as guides, volunteers, and leaders in sport and conservation issues. (Intro 100-200 words; Q&A 300-500 words)

Adventure Writing
What we’re looking for: Feature articles that offer more than the average trip journal. Good adventure travel writing grips the reader with the feeling of being there and offers something — exceptional humour, an exciting and original experience, or a richer understanding through regional fishing lore and history — more than a play-by-play account of what happened on your trip. Our destination stories must go beyond a mere description of a place with a fresh angle deepened by background information and/or an interview with a local character. 500-800 words

KAO Regular Columns

Skills
What we’re looking for: Tips, rescues, navigation, rigging tips, and paddling skills. Everything a kayak fisherman should know, except how to fish (see “Tactics”). 300-500 words

Tactics
What we’re looking for: How to catch fish. Tips and techniques for catching specific species in certain situations. Please have a narrow focus—do a thorough job with a very specific topic. 300-500 words

Hotspots
What we’re looking for: Guides to your favourite fishing destinations. Introduce the area’s geography, popular fish species, and fishing wisdom. Quote local outfitters and experts, if possible. Also include a fact list including: What’s Biting, Season, Onshore Attractions, Local Lore, and Put-in/Time/Distance info. Intro 100 words; Fact list 30-50 words each

KAO Photography Submissions

Almost all KAO will require at least one photo or illustration. Photo guidelines are as follows:
  • Submit high-resolution original camera files. You don’t need you to send RAW format files; JPGs are fine. But please don’t mess with color or resolution (don’t down-size the image).
  • Pictures must be crisp, well composed and focused, with rich color.
  • Please provide our design department with some options, if possible. We don’t need 100 images; 6-12 of the best will give us lots to work with.
  • The best magazine images are both stunning photographs and help tell the story ie about the person, place, thing, skill or tactic featured in the article.
  • Please provide: Relevant photo information that might include who, what, when, where and how; and who should be credited with the photo. You must acquire permission for photos that are not your own.
  • Photos can be emailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or sent via FTP, call for server details.
